چکیده

observations over the globe. The modeling activities encompass diagnostic studies with a number of radiative transfer codes, particularly the Discrete Ordinate model of Stamnes et al. (1988) (DISORT), and the development of a highly flexible Monte Carlo model to compute the threedimensional (3-D) radiation field for any cloud (liquid water) distribution. In addition, a number of multifractal analyses have been performed with satellite data, and new radiative transfer simulations have been achieved. Introduction

The influence of mixed‐phase clouds on surface shortwave irradiance during the Arctic spring

[1] The influence of mixed‐phase stratiform clouds on the surface shortwave irradiance is examined using unique spectral shortwave irradiance measurements made during the Indirect and Semi‐Direct Aerosol Campaign (ISDAC), supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program. An Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD, Inc.) spectroradiometer measured downwelling s...

Cloud modulation of surface solar irradiance at a pasture site in southern Brazil

Broken cloud fields create mosaic radiative landscapes with interchanging cloud-shaded and sunlit areas. While clouds attenuate solar radiation incident on cloud-shaded areas, sunlit ground surfaces may actually receive more irradiance than under a clear sky due to light scattering and reflection from neighboring clouds. In this paper, we studied these two opposite but closely related aspects o...

The Relative Importance of Clouds and Sea Ice for the Solar Energy Budget of the Southern Ocean

The effects of clouds and sea ice on the solar radiation budget are determined for the Southern Ocean around Antarctica between latitudes 50° and 80°S. Distributions of cloud optical depth are used, together with distributions of surface albedo, to estimate the geographical and seasonal variations of shortwave irradiance and cloud radiative forcing at the surface, both for the present climate a...

The Role of the Effective Cloud Albedo for Climate Monitoring and Analysis

Cloud properties and the Earth’s radiation budget are defined as essential climate variables by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The cloud albedo is a measure for the portion of solar radiation reflected back to space by clouds. This information is essential for the analysis and interpretation of the Earth’s radiation budget and the solar surface irradiance. We present and discuss a ...

UV Irradiance Enhancements by Scattering of Solar Radiation from Clouds

Scattering of solar radiation by clouds can reduce or enhance solar global irradiance compared to cloudless-sky irradiance at the Earth’s surface. Cloud effects to global irradiance can be described by Cloud Modification Factors (CMF). Depending on strength and duration, irradiance enhancements affect the energy balance of the surface and gain of solar power for electric energy generation. In t...
